oh! Chromeo

Još dva dana do početka Exita i samo dva dana do nastupa Chromea! can't wait! U nastavku, deo intervjua koji je Dejv dao Be Street-u novembra 2008.

As regards funk, what are your references? And your music influences in general?
As for Pat his references in funk are rather stuffs like Roger or the Mineapolis sound like The Time. Actually, there are tons of sub-Roger, sub-Rick James or of sub-Prince too unknown - discs for less than one Euro which only Pat in the whole world, likes. I prefer Hall & Oates, Robert Palmer, Huey Lewis ard Billy Ocean. We both love Steely Dan, Toto, les Doobies - what we call here the "dad rock" or the "yacht rock". As regards rap, I Grew up with Mobb Deep, the Wu, Biggie, just like everybody. And now, it's Wayne, just like everybody. The same with electro, we don't know much of it, but we like the best stuffs: Boys Noize, Soulwax, Ed Banger, Switch... However, there are two albums without which Chromeo wouldn't exist: "Les Rythmes Digitales" and "Discovery".

Where does your name "Chromeo" comes from?
It's a contraction of "Chrome" and "Romeo": the cold and robotic side, and then the lyrical land romantic side. It's also a huge dedication to Cameo (a 80s funk band from New York).

You both have very different clothing styles: P-Thugg is more into the streetwear style and Dave appears mostly in small suits... Is it something you wanted or is it really your style in everyday life?

It is really our style in everyday life. It has always been this way. Actually, formerly, I got dressed a little more in the hip-hop style. I looked like a looney but I am all the same very proud to have been the owner of a Cross Colors pants in 1994. Ii should have kept it... I have heard that "fakir" cuts are becoming, fashionable again. (Laughter).

Fancy footwork evokes an original way of dancing. Are you good dancers or do you only dance when you are a little tipsy?
Pat is a hell of a dancer. As for me, I am too ill at ease in my tight pants. Fancy Footwork is just our version of "Je danse le Mia" (a song by a French rap band IAM). When we have seen IAM's video, it has opened our eyes, because we liked and listened to the same stuffs as them: SOS Band, Delegation, Shalamar... We told ourselves that we were "mias" from Quebec. Incidentally: you should see A-Trak dancing, it's quite something!

To conclude, can you give us some information about the next album? Or about your plans for the next months?
We are beginning a huge tour in the US in two weeks, then in August, we're going to England to play in festivals. Then, without wasting time, we're starting to work on the next album. I feel like doing more songs like "Momma's Boy". I listen to Billy Joel a lot these days.

One last question... How did you have the idea of the synthesizers with girls legs?
Tis idea comes from our friend Jeremie from Surface 2 Air. He was inspired by ZZTop's videoclip "Rough Boy" and album cover was produced in collaboration with an old italian erotic photographer. This is how the legs became our logo. This is one of the only artistic decision we haven't made wittingly.
